Community Wardens & Other Community Agents

Ferguslie Park Community Wardens – Paisley, Renfrewshire

Established and supported a number of projects and innovations including an awareness raising board game and the funding for a youth club.

Kirkcaldy High School – Kirkcaldy, Fife

Pioneered an idea that allowed for greater communication between the police and pupils whilst providing an education in community relations and spirit.

Abbeyview Junior Wardens Scheme – Dunfermline, Fife

Teaching children valuable lessons in citizenship and responsibility for their community; an education ranging from healthy eating habits to preventing vandalism.

Elaine Webster, Headteacher, Auchenlodment Primary School – Johnstone, Renfrewshire

Encouraged improved community relations with initiatives such as the Junior Warden scheme and also provided educational and practical resources.

Dochcarty Residents Association – Dingwall, Highlands

Played an instrumental role in providing evidence for a dispersal order and their work has also led to thousands of pounds worth of regeneration to the area.

Association of the Residents of Cliffburn and Hayshead – Arbroath, Angus

Provided preventative activities like street football and raised the money to fund improvements to park facilities whilst encouraging the community to have a sense of pride.

Upper Nithsdale Youthwork Forum – Sanquhar, Dumfries & Galloway

Provided a communicative link between local agencies and youths which provided the inspiration to organise regular events and activities.

Generation Youth – North Lanarkshire

Increased communication with the police was encouraged through free entertainment and activities for youths, a focal point being a mobile recording studio.

Individuals Category

Morag Buck – Alloa, Clackmannanshire

Supported the police by giving evidence and encouraging other residents to stand up to their antisocial neighbours who were subsequently evicted.

Betty Watson MBE – Edinburgh

Listened to and involved herself with youngsters in her area and then responded to their needs by helping to fund a skatepark and community garden.

Elma Mitchell – Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire

Saved the local Town Hall, which had become a magnet for antisocial delinquents, from ruin and cooperated with police to provide evidence against vandals.

Lorna Arthur – Edinburgh

Resolutely stood up to antisocial neighbours despite their threatening behaviour and gave evidence which was instrumental in delivering an eviction order.

Applications for the Young People's Category

  • Winner (£5,000)

Tranent Football Project – Tranent, East Lothian

Previously seen as a negative influence in society, these youngsters cleaned their environs, helped to organise diversionary activities and create a drop-in centre.

  • Runners up (£1,000)

Tullos Primary Eco-Council – Aberdeen city

Educated irresponsible dog owners and organised an event to promote the cleansing of their environs from the prevalent problem of dog fouling.

Tullibody Junior Challenge Group – Tullibody, Clackmannanshire

Produced a film DVD to raise awareness of identified issues and subsequently worked closely with the council to address these problems in their community.

Zone 98 – Tarves, Aberdeenshire

Young people supporting a range of initiatives to promote a better quality of life for their peer group in the community, this included building a skatepark.
