Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital as well as the second largest city, is a cosmopolitan city of new and old. Cobblestone streets, impressive architecture, nature, beaches and fabulous shopping offer something for everyone. A city of attractions, friendly people and good food; it is no wonder that Edinburgh receives such a large amount of visitors every year. Below are a few must-see/must-do attractions in this charming city.

Edinburgh Castle

Sitting up on Castle Rock (an extinct volcano), this fortress dates back to the 9th century and receives well over a million visitors every year. Historical displays are held for visitors, complete with period costume and weaponry. The One O’Clock Gun has been fired every day at exactly 13:00 since June 7, 1861 (except during the World Wars) with the exception of Sundays, Good Friday and Christmas. Walk through the Great Hall, see Scotland’s Crown Jewels, walk through several museums and exhibits and visit St. Margaret’s Chapel which was built in approximately 1130 and is the oldest building in Edinburgh. Also in the castle are two restaurants and some shops to enjoy.

Edinburgh Zoo

Situated on 82 acres, the Edinburgh Zoo opened its doors in 1913 and has more than 1,000 rare or endangered animals. Visit the Budongo Trail to see chimps close up, catch the Penguin Parade at 2:15 and watch the Sun Bears climb and explore. Do not forget to walk through the Rainbow Landing Aviary to see brilliant birds like the Bali Starling, blue poison frogs and stick insects. Those less inclined to walk can enjoy the free Hilltop Safari, a 30-minute trip around the zoo.

Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

Home to one of the largest collections of plants in the world, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh has seasonal highlights for every single month of the year. The sweet-scented Daphne, from Slovenia, blooms in March, May brings flowering trees and prickly beauties from Tuscany abound in August. Guests can check out the other months on their website.

Scottish Rugby

Scotland’s international rugby games go back to the year 1871 when England lost to Scotland. The Scotland/England rivalry is still happening today, especially at the Calcutta Cup. Take in a game and root for the home team.

Shopping

An eclectic affair in Edinburgh, shop different areas for a diverse choice in items. Stockbridge is a gem when it comes to unique finds in second-hand stores as well as gourmet food shops, handmade items can be found at the West End and for clothing boutiques, fancy chocolates, gift shops and morning tea head to Bruntsfield and Morningside.
